Turkmenabat Water Treatment Plant

NEW 150 Mℓ/D POTABLE WATER TREATMENT PLANT

The Turkmenabat Water Treatment Plant project was a joint venture between Turkish civil engineering contractor Polimeks Insaat and Paterson Candy International for the Lebap Provincial Administration of the Government of Turkmenistan. The contract valued at US$ 18 million consisted of a water treatment facility to replace the existing outdated plant and supply 150 000 cubic meters of potable water to the people of Turkmenabat.

PCI AFRICA was responsible for the process and plant design, MEICA design, procurement and delivery, and the supervision of installations and the commissioning of the plant. The contract period was 18 months and was completed on time in May 2004.

The plant consisted of a raw water intake, 6 flat-bottomed clarifiers, 8 rapid gravity filters, storage reservoir, clear water pump station and chemical treatment facility.

The raw water pump station consisted of 4 duty horizontal split case pumps (2 standby) with 135kW electric motors delivering raw water to the clarifier structure.

The raw water passed through 6no coagulant contact tanks incorporating alum dosing and pre-chlorine treatment. 6no. flat-bottomed clarifiers remove the coagulated sludge to disposal off site.

8no rapid gravity completes the water treatment before chlorination and storage. The chemical treatment facility provides for addition of alum, polyelectrolyte, and lime if required. A package electro-chlorination unit provides Sodium Hypochlorite for chlorination.

Clear water pump station has a capacity of 7 400m3/hr utilizing 6no (4 duty, 2 standby) 400kW electric motor and pump sets.

The plant is semi automatic with the flow control and filter backwash automated and monitored in a central control room.
